The design is based on a redevelopment strategy that addresses "neuralgic" issues on various scales, from urban planning to function and detail. The aim is to achieve the greatest possible improvement for about 100 workplaces, 50 apartments and for the outdoor space with few but effective interventions. The densification to exploit the full potential is concentrated. The energy-efficient refurbishment of the building envelopes takes up the theme of the horizontal structure of the existing building and creates different atmospheres through variations on the same theme: The façade of the office is given a certain public austerity through the reuse of the façade panels and the introduction of brise soleil, while the featured wooden arcades give the apartments a more private character. The common theme unites all three buildings and naturally integrates the increase in volume on Muttenstrasse into the ensemble.
In principle, this is associated with an economical use of resources. Careful handling of the existing building and a strategy that allows for situational adaptation make it possible to make corrections during the planning process. By integrating the existing building into the extension of Muttenstrasse and continuing to use the redundant façade panels, the greenhouse gas emissions for the construction project can be reduced. The calculation of the CO2 equivalence resulted in 380,000.00 kg CO2-eq savings for the integration of the existing Muttenstrasse building and 17,900.00 kg CO2-eq savings for the reuse of the exposed concrete façade panels...
